Being down there in Texas you probably don't have much of a rust problem, but never say never. Has the tank ever leaked? If so, Look at the seam where the tank is welded together. If it looks wet, don't mess around. Go ahead and replace it. Also look at where the sending unit is mounted on top of the tank. If the sending unit is rusted and there are any signs of wetness or leakage or if the steel fuel lines appear to be rusted, replace the sending unit as well. If rust is not present and there are no leaks, simply have the tank thoroughly cleaned inside and out. Drain it of any old fuel and recycle that fuel in an environmentally responsible manner. There is a filter screen on the inlet side of the sending unit. Make sure it is not clogged up. Inspect and replace the sending unit's "O" ring if warranted. Reinstall the tank along with new neoprene or solvent resistant fuel hoses no matter how good the old hoses looked. Use new clamps as well. Hope this helps.
