While the motor and transmission are out of my 80 Elky and patiently waiting for my new motor to show up, I thought I might as well do Body bushings. I climbed under the car just a few minutes ago and ID'ed 7 bushings on one side and was able to remove 6. The odd ball one was tucked up where the spring sits in it's upper cradle. It looked like it was just pinched in there with no bolt. I haven't lifted the body yet and I'm going to wait until the new polly ones show up. Has anyone done bushings on a gen 5. Is there a total of 14... 7 per side with one just pinched in there?

Thanks for the links, those were great. I'm still confused by #5 near the rear springs. His instructions say to remove the bolt but I swear that there isn't one there. Has anyone done bushings on an El Camino and remember if that bushing is just pinched in place?

Thanks

I thought only the Grand Nationals got that bushing . . . maybe it was a factory mistake or is it possible that the bolt had broken/fallen out somehow?

You are correct there are two bushing above the rear springs they sit inbetween the frame and body no bolts Iam not sure if they come with any kits

Just order a kit for a GN and they will have the bushing.some other makes use them also. I found them in a 79 GP, 78 Cutlass????

The one near the springs are more a "spacer/dummy" then a bushing since it is just held in place by pressure.

I always thought about running a bolt threw it for that little extra support.

Also on some cars #3 was a dummy also, funny thing the cage is in the body, so I bolt them in also.

Great info Guys,
What I'm looking at is a huge piece of rubber about 2" in diameter poking through a hole in the frame, no bolt in the center of it. I think GP guy is spot on, it could be that because it's a true SS it has them there but who knows.

The mounts show up in two days according to Summit, I'll knock out the drivers side in less than an hour for all the old bolts came right out.

Thanks again

Darrin

That is a good read!
You must of done that to that Cutlass in your photo, I see absolutely no body twist with both wheels the same distance off the ground.

Yep, the Cutlass has a roll bar, rad x brace, fender 2 rad braces, jounce bars, "custom" GP style brace, Hotchkis control arm braces and a custom bar attaching the rear frame rails.

There is no back seat brace since I was required (NHRA) to put in a metal firewall.

It also has poly body bushings in all positions.

Sunday I was getting a foot of air and she was dead level.

I would think making a "bolt in" bar to support the back of your bed would not be too hard. Just an idea.
