I have a 350 bored 40 flat tops with comp magnum 292 cam. I currently have Gm 041 heads with 64 cc chamber 2.02/1.6 vales, beehive springs .525 lift,1.5 ss roller rockers. A local company has some of the aftermarket heads for $600 they sale as there brand but they are comparable to the procomps. They are 64 cc 2.02-1.6 valves and 200cc runners. The question is whether there is any substantial power to be had by switching to the aftermarket heads? They are aluminum and the runners are bigger. But am i going to find 100 Hp? 75? 50?
I can't say for sure exactly how much power you will pick up, but if they have an updated combustion chamber design, that alone will pick you up efficiency and some power. I have had a few customers and buddies that wanted ProComp heads on their engines because of cost, all of these I did some porting on just to clean up the runners. I have to say I was surprised by how well they have ran for the price, also have never had problems with any of them. Don't get me wrong they're definitely not AFR's, Brodix, etc., but for the price they're not bad. I may be going out on a limb here, but I'll almost guarantee you will pick up at least 40 hp untouched and more with some massaging. It just depends on how much porting you want to do. I built a 383 for a friend a few years back that had a scat rotating assembly 9.6:1, Howards 235/240 @ 0.050 lift .510/.520 lift hydraulic flat tappet cam, RPM AirGap intake, 750 Holley, ProComp heads that I cleaned up and it made around 450hp/460-470tq if I remember correctly. So they can make power, plus the aluminum dissipates faster and allows more compression on pump gas.
