Is 1983 the only year of the 81-87 style Grand Prixs that does not have the chrome strip running up the center of the hood? I have 3 hoods, all off of 83s, and none of them have it. All the other years i have looked at seem to have it though.

Bump. I'm curious too

I did a little searching of a number of GP picts, 78-88. I found that all had the strip. The 83 was the only one I saw that sometime had the strip and sometime did not. This seemed a little weird. This nothing official, just a wide search of general pictures.

I still haven't found anything definite, but 83s are the only ones iv'e seen without it. Seems kinda odd that they deleted it for one year only :?

In 81-82 & 84-87, the hood ornament and chrome "windsplit" down the middle of the hood were standard on all GP trim levels, with the exception of the 86 2+2. In 1983, it was not available at all - not even as an option. This info is from the dealer catalogs and order guides BTW.

Agreed. I checked the parts manual, not shown on the 83.
I guess the ramifications of that is if someone wanted a shaved look, they should hunt down an 83 hood....no holes.

1983 was the only year the GP omitted the hood ornament. I don't know why because that was a trademark for the GP for a long time through the seventies. Well needless to say it was back for the 1984 model year which i own, and i am glad that it has one. The car looks worse without it, in my opinion.

I acctually prefer the smooth look without the hood ornament and the chrome split down the hood. I think it looks a lot cleaner. I still wonder why GM only did it for one year?

because everybody complained when they took it off maybe? I like the chrome strip and the hood ornament it set the GP apart from all the other g-bodies and it goes with all the rest of the chrome trim on the car.
