Hey I was wondering how good a Grand National 200r4 is? My old 200r4 just blew up on me so I need a new one. I have a guy selling one for 350 and I just do not know how good they are. I know all other g body 200r4 suck balls, but I assume that the 200r4 on the GN is ok, but not sure.
My understanding is that they have the best servos but that many builders actually prefer the ones out of the MCSS. The ones from the 442 are not bad either. Aside from those the rest of the 200-4r are pretty weak from the factory. Regardless a good shift kit like the CKPerformance sells and an inexpensive transmission cooler go a long way to help these things last behind abuse.
Besides the small upgrades done to all 2004r's over the years, the only difference in any of them are the valve bodies, govenors, and converters.
GN,Monte SS,and 442's got the good vb's and govenors.
They all used the same internals from the factory wether it was a performance app or a grocery getter.
FWIW the local 2004r guru around here says that once he installs a shift kit, servo, and dual feeds the directs, you cannot tell the difference between the factory hipo version and the ones in non perf applications.
Well I had one in my El Camino. It broke on me the fist month I had on it. 😢 So now I have to either upgrade mine or get a brand new upgraded one. Also you can talk to none gbody people and they will tell you they suck not even knowing that they are better then 700r4
A healthy stock one out of a GN/MCSS/442 with a good shift kit and trans cooler will hold alot. stock trans only cooler in GN has ran 12.4s and & has 100k still going

You don't say what part of the country you are from so I can't recommend anyone to rebuild yours. As stated the 200 4r has its limitations in stock form. The brf from the Tr, CZ from the MCSS and the OZ from the H/O and 442 are regarded as the best from the factory but all have different VB/governor combos.
With the right builder, a 200 4r could live happily behind your BBC. You might invest in the CK performance book to get an idea what goes into one.
