i read that the earlier 83-85 montes had 342 gears and later 86-88 years had 373s,but posi's werent standard but it was a popular option

All 83-84 Monte SS's had a 3.42 rear gear. The '83 could only be had with a TH350 trans. '84 SS's could be had with either a TH350 or TH200/4r.

All 85-88 had a 3.73 The gears were changed because of the TH200/4r being now the only trans option. This combonation helped make the car feel alot faster than it really was.

Positraction was an option all years.
