Unfortunately, a lot of our First Nations people are stuck in a cycle of poverty and, substance abuse. Think of the inner city African Americans down there or your local White Trash. The treaties basically makes them wards of the State. The wording is till the Sun rises and the Sun sets, so forever! The fastest growing segment of our population contributing nothing! It needs to be ended and settled fairly. Don't even go to the abusive Residential Schools, psychical, mental and sexual abuse along some people who no doubt had good intentions but stripping people of who they have been for generations can't be done in one abusive sweep. It cost our country a huge amount, they got a big pay off, as they should have. Unfortunately there is also the treatment of former Slaves in Canada as well, signed into extremely one sided long term contracts and other bad treatment. Mom talks about how her Great Grandparents had a servant of Colour, even she doesn't know the shameful treatment of the former slaves and her family may have been guilty. It was so bad, that a British Minister and his Brother took over 1000 former Slaves to the new free Country of Sierra Leone, these people wanted out of Canada. There has always been good people trying to do the right thing. My relative Dr John Rae had great respect for Canada's First Nation People. He knew understanding how they lived was key to survive in the Arctic and its potential -70 temps. What people don't know and why few have heard of John Rae, despite being ahead of his time is the rivalry between the Hudson Bay Company and the Royal Navy. So when a Company man reported to the Navy Admiralty that the Franklin Party perished, bad things happened. First it was leaked to the press and his Iniut guides were very hesitant to take him on the 10 day trek to the site of the alleged cannibalism, so he did not see it personally. Charles Dickens got wind of it, being a friend of Lady Franklin. He basically accused the Inuit of being murderous, lying savages. Dr Rae defended them in rebuttal but the damage was done. Franklin was claimed as the man who completed the Northwest Passage. Despite no evidence was ever found and Cannibalism was committed by metal tools, not the stone knives of the Inuit. The last link of the Passage is Rae Strait and he submitted it as such to the admiralty. There is your Canadian history lesson. We like to think we are better than Americans but are we? Happy Thanksgiving.
