I am having a 350 built and put in. originally, it was to be an older 350 built, 305 H.O. heads, lunati 10001 barebones cam, quad carb, flowtech headers, aluminum intake etc... The mechanic called and suggested we use a 350 block out of a 1993 truck and TPI 305 heads (or maybe they were TBI 305 heads) with center bolt valve covers. He told me to find a vortec carbueted intake manifold. Is there such a thing and is this set up real?

There is such a thing, but your mechanic doesn't know what he is talking about. The vortec intake wont bolt to the older centerbolt heads. What you will need is an intake for 87-95 wich has a bolt pattern simular to the pre 87 heads but at a slightly different angle. A true Vortec intake has the mounting holes going straight down, that is the quick way to point one out.

Did you already drop a bunch of money on those 305 heads? If you didn't might I suggest getting some 062 or 906 Vortecs, or some old 291 or 462 double/camel humps, or a set of Iron Eagles from Dart... Any of those heads is a better choice for even just a mild rebuild it'll make the same if not more low end torque and pull harder up top to boot.

The heads are not the question really, they were free (plus that was covered in another thread). My problem or question is about the bottom half. will a 93 block work in a 84 GP? Also what type of intake do I look for?

the block will work and 81regal told you what intake you need..

x2 :!:
If you want a lot of bang for little bucks, plus better mpg, get the vortec heads and a roller cam block (like the one he suggested). The roller cam allows higher lift with lower duration for a smooth running but very powerful and torquey engine. The Edelbrock Vortec EPS manifold is an excellent choice for this combo. I built one with this exact setup some years back with a 268H Comp cam (I had the older non-roller cam) and it made 372hp and 424# of torque on the dyno. A roller cam would have been worth 20 hp. Just try to keep the compression ratio 10:1 or less to avoid timing issues (mild dish piston)

If you look up the flow #s on those 906 and similar heads you'll see why. And all this stuff will drop right in and bolt up just the same as the older block.

Added bonus: one piece crank seals
