Hey guys, I havnt posted here much because my car never really did get finished because, well the motor my buddy rebuilt for me was never right. but i saved and just bought a crate motor instead...the 350/290hp. 326ft lbs of torque combo from GM. I had a set of cast sanderson headers i was going to match with the motor, however now that the motors in, the headers are clearly not going to clear. The car should be running tommorow and the single exhuast won't cut it. I figure if I want headers, now is the time. However, the car is going to be my everyday driver for the summer, and with gas prices souring I'm curious, would You put headers on your summer time beauty if you had a beater too? I doubt the car will ever be run down the strip or anything, its just my midlife crises years and years early i guess.

Get some cheap headers it will help both power and mileage. Here is my advice on headers; 1 get good gaskets such as www.remflex.com othewise eventually you will have leaks and need to re-torque your bolts etc and you will regret it. 2. At minimun add several light coats of good header paint and allow it to dry between coats. Let them cure at least a day or two preferably more before installing and running the engine. Often the cheap thin factory paint goes to crap and you end up with rusty headers on a relatively new clean engine. Ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure when it comes to headers. If you hold your mid life crisis a day or two and do this first you will be glad you did.

I would go with shorty headers on a pure street car. They give better ground clearance and are easier to install than full length.

brand?

Okay, I've talked to others and it seems most agree I should go with headers. I have 2 local speedshops, one wants $179 for Flowtechs and one wants $389 for Hedman headers. These hedman headers look like quality tho. Anyone have any suggestions of what ones to get? I really wanted to use the sanderson set I have because they are cast and dont need gaskets or tightening. Figures though, they come straight down and hit the frame. What headers have you guys had good experience with?

I don't know which brand whould be better, but I'll tell you what I look for.

First I look at the flanges. I like a thicker flange, since usually you'll have better contact with the head thus reducing chances of warpage. Then, I look for the welds for good penetration. Hopefully this helps.

I've had the Edelbrock TES on my Monte for a few years now, and I've found it to be a quality system. If you get a good cat back system then it should be pretty efficient. Just my $0.02.

I have had Edelbrock TES headers since 1996 with no complaints. Just be sure to get the set for a G code 305, and not an H code, or else you get a Y pipe that narrows to 2.25 in for a very small cat.
