New guy to this forum. I just acquired a 79 Malibu 4 Dr. Building a small block for it. Any new input on what long tube headers actually fit good on these cars? The last thread I found here was from 2020. Thanks

I am installing long tubes from a 1st gen Camaro and they fit kinda meh. 1-5/8" tubes. Driver side fit very well only had to tap it in a little bit down low rear where the control arm mounts. However the passenger side is way worse but doable if youre willing to do some more header smashing.

I got mine used in good condition for dirt cheap so i dont mind, way better than the gmt400 shorties i had on it before. Had to absolute mangle the tube close to the steering shaft boot for that one

Regardless of the brand of long tube header, my understanding is that you will need to either notch your existing transmission cross member or purchase a new one, notched of course, to allow for the pipe. If I remember correctly its the passenger side that needs the notch where space is the issue.

I'm currently running Hooker Comps that required slight mods due to touching the oil filter, brake and/or gas vent line, and passenger upper control arm. For my other G I've chosen a set with stepped primaries from Schoenfeld, but they require modification of the heater box. I don't know that their regular style does. https://www.schoenfeldheaders.com/apps/search?q=G+body

GP403 has these listed: https://shop.gbodyforum.com/1978-88-g-body-sbc-long-tube-headers-2/

Kooks, American Racing Headers, Doug's, and even Flowtech all have great reviews from people on this and other G Body forums.

I do know what ones not to get. While they look great, Patriot H8047-1 ceramic coated headers made for our Gbody’s did not fit very well. It took quite a bit of massaging to get them in.

I can't personally recommend any as mine are old enough that the company isn't around anymore but my advice is,go to summit racing-fill in the search criteria of your car the model year etc/your preferences and read the actual customer reviews on the parts.people have no issue voicing their findings/likes/dislikes about parts they've spent their hard earned money on.this is the closest thing i can think of aside from something found on a forum.

In my Malibu I have a set I got used for a Camaro, they fit ok with a little massaging. On Grand Prix, I have a set of hooker headers that fit without any trouble.
