I'm wiring up a relay for electric fans and was wondering if I can tap into the ignition wire at the distributor, or is it a bad idea to draw power from it.?

Chop the factory harness as little as possible. Fans draw a lot of current. Find switched hot on your fuse panel, insert a spade terminal, and send this control wire through the firewall to a relay. Take current right off the battery, with an inline fuse, to the fans from the relay. Sounds like more work, but you'll avoid overheating your 30-year-old wiring. You can slip much of the new wiring into the wire looms to make it look sano.
