Hi, my name is Ken and I live in Marion VA. Recently I purchased a 1983 Hurst/Olds in pretty fair condition. It is quite driveable and looks great at 25 feet but, as with most buys, has a few things that need attention. I have been out of the "old car business" for about 5 year after selling my really nice 55 Chevy 2 dr. sdn with 327/340 hp, 200-4R trans, Vintage Air, CD changer, and on and on. It would cruise at 135 mph all day long! We bought a house with the proceeds so I can't complain and by now have it almost paid off with the big down payment the 55 afforded.
My Hurst Olds is the standard black and silver with stripes and decals but as I said has a few problems. The stripes are not original and it has been painted although dryer pop ruined the black paint. The paint is slick but with tiny holes all over the horizontal surfaces. Oh, it has about 74k miles on it. Plans are to do a complete re-paint by a pro, a new strip and decal kit and fix a few things that nag at me. Right now I'm looking for a turn signal lever with cruise control and delayed wipers (4 wire version). The one that is in the car has the cruise button popped out and the switch inside the column is bad. The turn signal lever seems to be the hardest thing to find since it is a 4-wire lever and so far no luck in finding one. The transmission shifts good, but shifts to quickly so I guess the cable need to be reset on the carb. The A/C was dead but has been converted to R134 since I bought it. Now the vacuum switching is only putting out cold air to the windshield and won't come thru the dash vents. That is in the process of getting fixed. Of all things, the steering had a lot of slack in it and I found that the wheel bearings were loose in the front wheels (go figure!). The guy I got it from was "not a car person" so I'm not surprised. He told me the age old story that "There's not a thing wrong with it." Seems like the car salesman truthfullness was passed down to him somewhere along the line. Obviously I could see the paint problem and a few more things... but I always figure that there is twice as much wrong on a car than is first apparent! I was right.
The interior is pretty nice so not much work there. The rear shelf needs replacing and since I can't find anyone who repros them I may have to make one. There is a tiny amount of rust on the lower door edges but no biggie. The engine seems fine and all original. More later, just wanted to get my foot in the door!

Welcome WS4V,
Very nice car! My youngest son had one just like it (it also had a number of small items to fix). Fix the trans problem first so you don't take a chance on trans failure! The worst thing about fixing small items, is the waiting. Waiting for the time, waiting for the part to arrive, or waiting for the money to be saved! The best thing about fixing small items is your ride won't be down for extended periods of time!
Have fun with your car, and you'll have alot of friends here at the site to help!

Doug

Welcome!

Welcome aboard, Ken.
Nice ride. Your '55 Chevy sounded like a hell of a nice machine.

Hi Ken. Welcome to the site!!! I am new to the site as well, joining 2 days ago. I'm not sure where Marion, Va is...but I am in Maryland just outside of Frederick. I too just purchased my 83 H/O about 2 weeks ago. To make a long story short...I was ready for a change. I had an ultra clean 71 Nova SS, roller 355 with all the good stuff, it was ready for race and I had to trailer it if I was going over 60 miles due to the 3.73 gears and 3 speed THM. Also the mix of cam2 with 93 octane gas was a bit expensive continuiously. Sold it back in March to help pay for my brothers funeral expense. I had been talking with this guy out of Nebraska with an 83 H/O, T top car with 36,000 miles on it. He had it repainted, striped, cleaned up...ended up spending over 18 grand on it. I was to purchase it for 11. Time continued, the painter guy went out of town with the car still 90% finished. I got tired of waiting when this H/O that I now have came online. This car was in Michigan, in very good shape...but does have a few quirky things wrong with it, like yours. It sits low on the left front, so I am going to replace the front coil springs and shocks to KYB's. A/C doesn't work either, a hose is missing across the engine bay and it once must have been bumped in the front because the striping is missing over the headlights. The paint and interior are excellent...this car has a factory moonroof and it all works perfectly. Mechanically it is very sound, it has 84,000 miles on it and I drove it back from Michigan over 550 miles running 70 - 80 mph with no problems. Oh the gas gauge is reading 1/4 tank. So I have to check that out. Keep me posted on your progress on your car. Tony - 83 H/O.

Welcome Ken, very nice ride! '83 was my favorite purely because of the black over silver paint theme!

Nice ride! Is that how the wing came on those cars?

That's how they came however it looks as though his is missing the two end caps. They often fell out which was one of the biggest probelms with the rear wings.
