I need some help/advise on finishing off the build of my 350 SBO

So far ive got..
'72 350 SBO
Boiled, new cam bearings, freeze out plugs
Moroso deep oil pan
Mondello Forged Aluminum Flat Top Pistons 10.5/1 with my 64CC 7A heads
7A heads fully ported/polished. New valves, Slightly milled
Hyd Roller COMP XR290HR Cam 236/242 @ 50* / .515/.533 lift with all associated locks/retainers etc
Scorpion 1.6 Roller Rockers/ Roller Lifters
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake

***Heres my problem, i ordered the COMP timing set that was associated with my cam choice p/n 3113
Installed the timing set and there is about a 1/4'' slack of play on either side of the chain. I used the supplied cam/crank gears
**What type of timing set is everyone running ?
**Advise?

Also, what type of aluminum radiator/fan setup is everyone running?
Im looking to get an alum rad, going with an external trans cooler so i don't need the cooler ports
I already have a 160* tstat and a alum flow kooler waterpump

Also. Im in need of a 3K Stall Converter
Push Rods.
Should i use the stock balencer or go with an aftermarket TCI?
Lightened Flex Plate or use the stock?

Im also looking into alum under drive pully brackets, Found Mondello makes a set and a few other companies
Anyone have any experience with these?

Thanks in advance!!

i believe i have an edelbrock double roller timing chain on my 350 olds.No problems.

I have a 3000 stall converter and running a dinky chinese aluminum "3 core" radiator with an external trans cooler thats hooked to my radiator also.

As far as cooling goes for me, i have overheating problems because of the way the motor is built (12.0 compression,59 cc heads) and the 3k stall doesnt help out on the street much, but to help it as much i got this radiator and i'm using a stock fan with a heavy duty clutch on it from napa. I am planning on a brass/copper 4 core from napa soon because this chinese radiator doesnt help out much. Its a champion 3 core from ebay btw.

You're olds will probably make as much or more power than my build, nothing too crazy so i'm using a stock flywheel and an aftermarket balancer, not sure on the make.

I havent heard anything bad about the underdrive pulleys and i plan on getting them sometime for my motor but i think they're too expensive for couple horsepower you save using them.

What carb are you running?

Make sure you actually measure everything to get your engines TRUE compression ratio. It always cracks me up when I hear people overestimating their CR because they made a ton of ( wrong ) assumptions or their buddy told them they would have X to 1 CR.

Also, degree your cam. Lining up the dots don't cut it!

Also. Im in need of a 3K Stall Converter

The right converter can have a profound effect on your performance. Get a QUALITY converter. Yes you'll pay a little more but it'll be worth it. Buy a cheapo 'TCI' or something from Summit and you will probably regret in in the long ( or short....) run.

I have no experience with underdrive pullys but have heard the cheapo ones on ebay are garbage. Personally I wouldn't want to run underdrive pullys, at least not on a street car. Not worth it IMO.

I know that March Performance just came out with a couple different sets of pulleys. They have them for alt, ps and alt,A/C, ps. I never heard any problem with their kits.

On Mondello's site they have the 2 and 3 groove pulleys. I dont know who makes the 3 groove but the 2 groove is RPC. You can buy that from Jegs and its alot less. RPC also has the Powersteering pulleys for the pumps with a keyway.(mines press on)
RPC 2 groove pulleys:
water pump #R8855
crankshaft #R8856
Alternator #R8857

Do yourself a favor and get a Cloyes True Roller timing chain, all others are just crap.
My engine builder went through 4 different makes of timing chains and all were off by a degree or two.
Cloyes is what most of the Olds guys run.

I have an Edelbrock timing set on my Olds 350. Not sure how accurate it is, but its what came in my engine kit from NorthernAutoParts.com. I haven't had any issues with it. I have 10k miles on my motor now.

Olds Performance Products has the Roll Master sets in various under sizes. You may need an under size chain. I like my Cloyes Street roller set. I was told the same by an engine builder that Cloyes timing sets were always dead on, degree wise.

The pistons i got are rated at 10.2xx.1 with my 64cc heads. I got my heads milled and a with the head gasket its got to be atleast 10.4/1 if not 10.5... Just easier to say 10.5/1

Yeah ive been saving for this proj for awhile so im not going cheap on anything, Id much rather buy it once and spend the money and buy it a second and have to do somehting over

Im hopeing that this Cloyes im ordering is the correct one, if not im gonna have to measure it out and figure out exactly the size i need, thanks for the info!

You are making assumptions that X = Y without verication. You also make no mention of deck height and the thickness of your head gaskets. You are going to be making a big mistake by making these assumptions. Building an engine correctly requires ALOT of measuring. Skip this 'step' and you may be scratching your head why your engine's such a dog. It happens all the time. Learn from others mistakes so you don't have to go through this.
