ok today i changed my speedometer cable on my 78 buick regal. the old one was broken in two when i got it (somebody cut it to fit big rims  ). when i finished, i started the car and it went immediately into reverse? i bent the bottom of the door when it hit the brick pole on the house 🙁
so next time i got in the car i was ready for it, i started it and it went into reverse but i hit the brakes. it goes to neutral and drive just fine and it all works fine but the shifter is kinda hard to push to park now and when it is there, the car goes backwards. so it goes backwards in park and reverse. i pushed it as far up as i could and then the horn started blowing. good news is that the speedometer works now but why is it doing this? maybe i hit something running the cable into the dash? or maybe i hit something on the transmission when i screwed the cable in?

sounds like you have the speedo cable bound on the shifter linkage from the steering shaft to the transmission

check out the shifting linkage on the side of the transmission.. was it Bumped? or if it got bent what ur experiencing would happen.. hard to shift into gears.... u should be able to grab it and select the gear into park... of FYI.. ur neutral safety switch isnt working.. ur car shouldn't be able to start in reverse

it goes to all the gears easly, i can push it in the park position to start it, but it still goes backwards, maybe the cable is blocking something?

i also think it's just the adjustment. i've had the same thing happpen on my car. a little fine tuning of the shifter cable and the linkage (floor shifter) and voila!

if your horn is sounding, that circut is shorting to ground after the horn

If its a floor shift do you have the right brackets on the transmission? The brackets from a 3spd are different from a 200r4 or overdrive. Also do you have the right shifter. It is also possible if it is floor shift that the spring on the bottom of J hook is bad and not locking it in park. As far as the horn going off I dont know . Check all adjustments you have them down on trans and also up top where rod meats the piece comin off column.

i was pushing the shiter up and it just went off.

 I wouldn't go around telling too many people that!

Good luck fixing the car too. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out the linkage & cable.
