i was recently offered a rearend out of a 71 cutlass, does anyone know whether these normally came with a 7.5 or 8.5 10 bolt ? if they came with both is there any way to tell which is which without removing the differential cover or finding the numbers on it ?

It's too difficult to read a post when it's just one really long wall of text.

yeah, the original was kind of long and drawn out.. LOL. sorry about that. i shortened it up. i have been doing some research and according to what i can find all cutlass 10bolts from 71 to 76 were 8.5" rears. id like to have someone who knows there cuttys verify that though. also, from what i can tell, it will with some slight modifications. again, would like to hear from someone more experienced with this than me.

71 cutlass would could be 8.2, or 8.5" believe 12 bolt were until 70

I believe that was the 8.2 rear and the olds 12 bolt rears are junk..stay away fromn them....You would be better off looking for the chevy-pontIac rears......they were better....the 8.2 rears are stronger then the 7.5 rears, but not near as strong as the 8.5 or chevy 12 bolt 8.875 rears...Then again, check the rear, if any luck the original has been replaced with more muscle 🙂
