From the sounds of it, it might be timing. Have you recurved your distributor? If you punch it from the line, and it hesitates, then goes, its probably timing.

Did you thoroughly block off the air injection system when you removed it? I ask this because I noticed what looks like stock exhaust manifolds on the car and the G body ones always had air injection fittings. I had failed to do this when I took mine off and the car did something similar to what you describe. When I blocked it off correctly, it ran fine. And yes, it took me a LONG time to figure it out as I only found the problem after reading an article in a magazine. 😳

Oh, and an Edelbrock Performer intake is dual drilled and the plenum is set up to take either a square flange or a spread bore carb.

@85 Cutlass Brougham- the manifolds came from a salvage yard because the ones from my ol 307 wouldnt fit. Im not sure what they came off of. How do I block off the air injector?

LOL @ DrRansom, you're probably right. It was so hard for me to find any olds motor except a 307 that I just switched to chevy. An olds 350 or 403 was my 1st choice but in my location everyone wanted WAY TOO MUCH for them. I found a 403 that needed a complete rebuild for $200, but the cheapest shop wanted $2300 for the rebuild  . I paid $1400 for this motor and transmission with all the extras so i think i got a deal.

Post a pic of the manifolds. That way, I can see if they ever had the fittings, and tell you what to do if I see anything wrong.

Check your fuel level in the bowls And you said you got a new carb is this a brand new carb or new to you? Pop the screws on the side of the bowls and check the fuel level if it's to low or to high it will do what your saying.
