Hi I'm looking to get new wheels on my 81 cutlass. It's stock ride height right now. I already have the wheel in mind I need to no what tire size to order. I want to get the torque thrust m wheels. Black with the lip. They come in 17×8 with 4.5 backspacing. I no 245/45r 17 fit on all four corners. But I really want to run 275/40r17 out back. Would I be able to run 275 on the 18x8 with 4.5 backspacing?

You would probably need a 9 to 9.5" wheel to fit the 275. Most tire company sites list the recommended wheel width for a particular sized wheel. Go to bfgoodrich, tirerack, etc. or even do a google search for 275 wide tires and wheels. There are plenty of guys on here probably running that size tire....xitabl442 is one of them and maybe he can chime in.
Scott.

Thanks for the reply I did see a couple serches turn up with some people who run 275 tire. But Im not sure on backspacing. I want those style torque thrust. They do offer a 17x9. But with like a 6 3/4 offset. I'm not sure if this would work

4.5" backspacing is about the max for the rear wheels without spacers

Like qdub said, 4.5" is about the max...thats what i just bought for the rear of my cutlass and plan on running a 255 wide on it. You would need a frame notch with that much backspacing and possibly a bigger tub.

Okay so 275/40 would be out the question then with the 17x8. I can go 255 out back, I was just hoping with these wheels I could get at least 275 out back with the ls swap I did

My current rear wheels (in my sig pic) are no more than 8" wide and have 275/60/15 tires.

You could maybe squeeze a 275 on them, but it would bulge and possibly rub. Just keep in mind the cutlass has a more squared off wheel opening limiting us cutlass guys without either rolling the fenderwell lip, or doing a notch.

I have 275/40/17s out back on a 17x9. I had to roll the wheel lip and run a 1" spacer, but it fits and doesn't rub. The wheels are forms Coys, not sure of bs. I think they only offer one offset so their website might list it. I can measure when I get home.
