How about a 1953 split window Volkswagen bug

What Hondas are today is what VW's were back in the day. I still dig VW's over Hondas any day.
I'd still like to acquire a single, or crew cab pickup.

The 53 is rough. I'll get some pics soon. Then I'll have to figure out how to post them. Trying split my time between the 83 Malibu wagon, the 53 bug and everyday chores. The task at hand now is finding a windshield for the wagon and finishing the door change out. How cool is that so many of us have some kind of experience with a Volkswagen. I have been driving one since 1974, but I'm a car junky anyway.

Are you talking about the busses that are trucks? If that makes sense because those things are cool there is a few around my town with Sti Subaru swaps in them

Yup, that's them. They are pretty cool, but getting rarer. People are asking crazy money for them even in rough shape.
A Suburu engine in one of them would be awesome.

One of my favorite movie scenes was in Stand and Deliver when the students steal Mr. Escalante's beaten beetle and return it, all restored.

The Beetle was a transformational car - when the other option was to walk or take the bus. Now cars are rolling entertainment and safety cocoons.

Ed,
Thanks for sharing the pics of your '53 split window and '66. Looking at them makes me feel nostalgic.

What's left to do on your wagon?

I took my road test on my Dad's '59 Bug. The shifter was so sloppy you could never tell what gear you were in until you let the clutch out. I started off in third instead of first , stalled, and failed on the spot. This car had semaphore turn signals that flipped out of the side pillars. My brother pretty much grew up in the cargo area behind the rear seats, toys and all. Someone actually stole that car at LaGuardia Airport. I'll bet they were sorry. Altogether we had that one, a '61 rag top, '65, '66, '71, 73, and my '65 Bus. I don't miss any of them.

Well, finally got a call yesterday to let me know the glass shop has the windshield after 2 months. I converted the rear doors from a four door to fit the wagon. The new door seals and outside window scrapers should be here this week. Got to paint all the jamps, front and rear on the car and the doors, then reinstall the doors. Going to have the rear glass removed by the glass shop when in goes in Monday for the windshield. There is a small amount of rust in the lower corners of the back side glass area. A new headliner. Going to two tone the car, gm code 11 from the body line up and gm code 69, a medium brown metallic from the body line down. Going to put a little gold glass pearl in the clear for the entire car. Car has decent brown interior so not going to do much with it. Has a new 350/350. Just want a nice driver. This a pretty unique car in my neck of the woods. I've had the car for 7 or 8 years. I hope to paint it in the next few months.
