The best way to nail my correct timing and everything else related to tuning my engine correctly, is to know exactly what camshaft I'm working with..

I have an unknown camshaft and I want to identify it without pulling the camshaft from the motor..

What are you guys' ideas on how to go about that?

I seen this ProForm universal cam checker..part # 68902... what do you guys think about this?

Need to know the size of the camshaft so that way I'm able to time and tune my engine correctly. Different size cams have different operating ranges when it comes to vacuum, timing, and RPM.

Without knowing what my camshaft is, I'm shooting in the dark.
Explain to me if you knew the lift, duration and lobe separation of your current cam how you would use this information to tune your engine differently?

Does changing the camshaft not change the vacuum range and RPM operation numbers on an engine when you change it from a stock camshaft? Does that also not change things as far as setting the timing? Or would the timing setting be the same as it was stock?

When they say my vacuum level is 13 HG and people are telling me that's too low for stock camshaft, then obviously I have an aftermarket camshaft that I don't know about that I need to know about if it changes the ball game of setting the timing of my engine.

Nobody has given me a clear answer on that for me to explain anything to you in that area.. I don't have an answer to give you because no one's giving me an answer whether or not changing the camshaft changes the ball game of time setting your engine from factory settings.

do you have any pics of your engine and the work you've done? cause it certainly sounds like a lot is going on here with noise, rebuild, cam, timing, idle, etc.
have you popped the front timing cover to see if there is a stamp on the front of the cam?

That's all the rebuilding I've done on my end.. I have rebuilt just about everything except for the heads and the camshaft.. and the exhaust system.
