I'm putting in a set of 3.23 gears on an F-body auburn LSD carrier with some moser 28-spline axles. How much of a difference will I notice vs my 2.29's w/ an open carrier? :shock:
Much better take off out of the hole....more traction. You will probably think the motor has been modified by the difference in the 0-60 runs....lol. You will probably burn a lot more gas....but it wont matter....lol
I sure hope so 😀 ! It runs 1550 rpm in OD w lockup at 80mph but gets better mileage at 2300 in D at 80mph but I bet the increased fun factor will reduce my mileage altogether.
I agree. You will be in the 1700 RPM range now in OD. The reason your mileage suffered was because you had more throttle opening to maintain speed in OD. You were out of the peak torque curve. Chances are now, your mileage will be closer in OD as opposed to 4th, but the fun factor will have you grinning, ear to ear.
If you are on flat land it may now pull the 1,700 with no more throttle opening than it took for the 2,300 to use the same or less fuel. But I suspect it will still be a little bit too tall for a 350 in a gbody pushing 80 mph. With the .70 overdrive ratio the 3.42 gear might have actually gotten you both a bit better acceleration and mileage at 80 mph. Taking advantage of a little more cam it probably would do an even better 1/4 and get its best mpg at that speed in with 3.73s.
fwiw I know my long stroke 509 would pull 1750ish rpm in a Gbody with a slightly taller .67 ratio but it was also at 70ish.
If you drive with a bit of a heavy foot your in town mileage might improve. Because you won't have to lay into the throttle as hard when taking off from a dead stop. At least that's why I think mine improved?
Probably. A lot of people don't realize that sometimes having a 2.xx ratio can actually kill mileage. 3.23-3.42's in my opinion are about the best street gear for a 3 speed transmission. Overdrive's can handle 3.73 easily and 5 or 6 speed manuals can do 4.10's and still get good mileage with superior performance everywhere.
