I removed the A/C unit from my 1987 Cutlass Supreme 307 V8; now it idles about 70-100 rpm too high. The Haynes manual and the owner's manual both say that the idle is computer-controlled and should only be adjusted by the dealer...Does anyone know how to adjust the idle speed without going to a mechanic? Or some other fix for this?

Try disconnecting your throttle positioning plunger. Whenever you set your heater on defrost or one of the former a/c functions, it will still kick up the idle to compensate for the load of the compressor. Make sure the heater selector is in the off position before you adjust anything.

When I removed my a/c way back before I knew what I was doing, I was running back and forth turning the idle speed up and down because of what turned out to be that damned heater switch kicking up the idle too high. I ended up just leaving the heater off all the time...

Unplug the green wire from the throttle kicker solenoid and it should be fine. If yours uses a different system than that, you will need to unplug the wire from the back of the HVAC switch in the dash as the previous poster indicated.
