just wondering how the shifter comes out on a 4 speed manual without taking apart the whole thing. is there like a pin you hammer out or something? thanks guys

its been so long since I did this I might be rememberizing it wrong.... but I think all there is, is just the 4(?) bolts holding the whole shifter assembly to the trans. pull the j-clips off for the rods, remove the handle and boot, pull those 3-4(?) bolts and you're done. There isn't any sort of pin to hammer out. Its possible its just stuck on there (rust?) if its never ever been off...

thanks man ill check tomorrow. im doing the clutch on my dads 4 speed elco

NP, just read what I wrote... by 'handle' I just mean the knob, not the entire handle poking thru the floor, that will have to come off as part of the whole shifter. Just so you're not trying to figure out how that comes off or anything.

I think he means the shifter handle, which gets released by slipping a shim down next to the bottom where it goes into the shifter itself on most cars. A spring loaded pin holds it in place. A Hurst shifter has 2 bolts holding the handle on. That way you can remove the trans without removing the whole shifter and rods, etc. Some have no way to remove it and then you must drop the whole shifter.
