Okay heres the deal, i am living in the netherlands europe and everything is hard to get for my monte carlo, i am still driving around with a TH200 transmission and it does the job okay, then came an opportunity to buy a 200R4 with a dual pattern boltholes and it came form a caddy fleetwood running and driving car, transmission shifts okay an the fluid is nice and clear and red of color.
What i need to know is:
is this 200R4 a direct swap with the TH200 ?
Can i use the converter that comes with the transmission or do i have to use the one from the TH200.
Speedo gear ?? can i swap this with the TH 200?
Drive shaft ?

Lots of questions i know but i am going to get this transmission coming friday couse the chance i will find another one in the next three years is near impossible overhere.

THe Cadillac 2004r is the weakest of the 200 4 speeds dont put a ton of power behind it. The valve body inside a Chevy CZ, or Cadillac CA has a less desirable valve body than its BRF, and BQ and OZ Buick/ Olds sisters. Those valve bodies are used in the Grand National as well as the 442. Why the better valve body?? I assume due to the 8.5 rear end that was supplied with the car as well as the higher governor speed on the BRF and the OZ being 5800. Speedometer gear inside the case may or may not be ok, depending on your gear.

So as mentioned, grab the drive shaft and the bolt up to the engine should be fine. If you add tons of power upgrade the transmission.

p.s. if you find a 700r4 torque converter (that you know the history of), you can use it. However I never use a TQ that I do not know the history of, it can completely damage your trans with contamination.

I thought the monte SS czf code valve body and governor was a hot item as well.... I sold a czf code 200r4 core from a 87 ss last year for 250 bucks.. no questions asked!! guy was build it and put behind a Pontiac 400 in his gto...

Thanks guys, i have a 79 monte carlo with a stock engine and the 7.5"" gm differential in the end, its not going to be a powerhouse its just for cruising and relaxing and thats where the R4 comes in, i need better gas mileage so an OD would have to do it.

You can't use the the same converter from the th200 but the 2004r should bolt right in and work with the drive shaft and cross member

The 200R4 can use the torque converters from the 200C and the '82 - '84 700R4. They all have the 27 spline input shaft. The 700R4 went to a 30 spline from '85 up.
Your current driveshaft will work but, your crossmember will not If your car is a '78 - 85. The '86 - '88 cars have a frame extension on the drivers side that allows the 200R4 and the TH-400 to be mounted. Some aftermarket stores sell a weld-in frame piece to use the 200R4 crossmember. The Caddy crossmember would have to be modified to work in a Gbody.

You cannot use the same crossmember mount point is different:

I would never shove a used converter into a trans, a rebuilt unit doesn't cost much.
Keep in mind the TH2004R has a lock up converter and will require a lock up control.

Converter came with the transmission, so thats a problem out of its way

You should be fine with that trans. You might consider some type of shift improver kit but it should get you where you want to go as is. You have a Cadillac trans from an 84 according to the tag.

Just make sure you get the TV cable set up as it controls the internal pressures. Without it you will have low pressures and most likely burn up some clutches in short order.
