I'm looking at a transmission out of an 1984 buick regal and the guy isn't sure what it is. The only thing he tells me is the model number is R429. Anyone know what this is?

That R429 isn't an id, the ID code is usually a 2 digit code (some newer ones are 3).
Transmission identification can be located in one of three positions on the transmission.
A.Identification plate on side of case.
B.Stamping number on governor cover.
C.Ink stamped on bell housing.

Have him check these locations to find out what code it is, then I can tell you what it is.

Appears to be 200-4R. I'm not aware of any others that came with a dual pattern case. Can't tell in the picture on the ad but a 200-4R has a "stepped" pan with a shallow portion at the rear. The 200 (3-speed) has a pan that resembles a TH350 (rectangular with a corner clipped off).

Now that I look closer it seems more like a TH350(c). A 200/200-4R wouldn't have a bolt-on tail housing. I've never seen one with a universal case before. Learn something new every day 😀 .

That's a TH-350 with the universal bellhousing.
Not sure how long they made them with the uni-pattern bellhousing like that, but they're out there... My Olds wagon had one.

Is there any way to look up the year/make/model of the vehicle that the transmission originally came with from the trans serial number?
