Okay, here's my little rant. As a 16 year old high school kid, I deal with teens a lot. I'm at the age where everyone is now getting a car. I've had my Buick for two years now, and I know every nut, bolt, and specification on and of that vehicle. And it's not a great car. It's in rough shape. And the ladies don't come flocking when you tell them you drive a 25 year old Buick.
Now for the ranting! What pisses me off is, kids' parents that go out and buy their dipshit kid a $10,000 car when the kid doesn't know a wrench from their *ss. I may not have a $10,000 car, or even a nice car, but I could tell you anything and everything you wanted to know about my $2,000 little Buick. Meanwhile ask any dipshit driving a new car that their parents bought them how many speed transmission they have (God forbid the displacement or even how many CYLINDERS) their car has, and they'll look at you like you have 4 heads and just pissed your pants.
BUILT NOT BOUGHT, rant over. God, I can't wait until I'm an old man so I can do this all the time...

i hear you there. i have 3 sons. and they have nice cars but as far as how to use a wrench or knowing anything about their cars, they have no clue, tried to get them into working on cars. they dont want to.

Well, I for one applaud you. Taking the time, responsibility to learn and understand the vehicle and for that matter anything you work on or use. It is a skill set and a mentality vastly lacking in teenagers....

Sadly many(NOT ALL) of those same kids don't respect or truly appreciate the gift of a car. As for the condition of your car just keep wrench'n and it will get where you want it eventually or it will be a starter ride that becomes a great education project that helps you refine skill and knowledge you can use for a lifetime.

The "right" ladies always flock to a classic ride.... IMHO

Its fun when you can smoke those kids but its getting tough with new cars with 4 cylinders that will destroy a small block 🙁 In high school my car was faster than about 95% of everyone else because most people around here had v6 Mustangs/Camaros, trucks or Ford Escorts  There really wasnt any rivalries here mainly because us car guys are all good friends. Out of all those people im pretty sure im the only person that still has their project car and most people know me for my car which is pretty cool...to me. My car was always called "The Primal Concrete Sledge" because on the 2nd day of school junior year I got a loud music violation for blaring the song of the same name by Pantera and because the title summed up my car perfectly. Ahhh good times....

Joe, we've all been there. It's irritating that some of us feel we've earned our ride while others had one dropped in their laps. A touch of jealousy (or whatever you want to call it) is completely understandable. Just don't let it consume you. Ten years from now you'll be working with dipshits that don't understand or appreciate the $50k car they drive. To them it's just a fashion statement. I predict that you'll be driving something you like because YOU actually like it. You probably will own it outright too while the other guys are working to make payments to a bank on a car that's depreciating faster than they can write the checks. I get the impression that you're fairly level headed. Just keep using common sense and life works out.

Working on your own stuff now builds character. Having expensive things handed to you usually isn't a good thing. There's nothing wrong with working for what you have, you will be the better for it in the future. The women will come in time don't worry about that. Enjoy your youth, trust me being an old man sucks.

Wow, it's good to see I'm not the only young guy still in high school on this site. And especially not the only young person into G Bodies. I agree with ya, not many teens are really interested in working on cars and modifying them anymore.

I'm 17, a senior, and drive the oldest car out of everybody at school. I'm proud to drive my Buick everyday. Not in perfect condition, but it's the only one around for miles. I think I'm also referred to as the parking lot grease monkey LOL. Nope, can't say there's many other kids around at school who have much knowledge about this kinda stuff, or let alone mechanics in general.

I've gotten several comments on my Buick. The first day of school last year, some kid said he likes my Monte Carlo. NOW when's the last time you saw a 4 door Monte Carlo?
And somebody also once said "nice rims man"

I appriciate your input. I'm glad at least someone thinks I'm level-headed! It's the lack of appreciation that bothers me more than anything. Appreciation for how complex a car really is; all the parts and engineering that goes into them, dropped into the laps of people who can't even begin to fathom that. And what also bothers me is that they did nothing to earn these vehicles. Their parents paid for them. These kids don't even have jobs. Meanwhile, I work 35 hours a week and balance school into that. I don't know, maybe I'm just crazy.

Your not Crazy, Im going the same exact thing over Here at WyoTech. While i'm over here working my *ss off and barely making ends meet, and there is some kid or grown kid(man Child) that has a 50,000 dollar car, partying every night and just wasting time and money.(Heres the kicker to that, i get questions for advise because Im a mentor on campus, and they need help because they were asleep in class= ) Look at it this way, we will know everything there is to know about our cars AND we will learn lessons they will never get the chance to, or will ever likely understand those lessons.

Also that rich *ss snob kid, that knows nothing about his car, just means more business for us that are car oriented in the future.

Just keep using common sense and life works out.
ive been hearing that exact phrase from my family so much the past year, and its completely right! it always works out even if it SUCKS getting there.

Problem solving skills are what carry you in a career. Your salary and promotions are based on the advantage you bring to your employer in hiring and keeping you. I once got a job offer by planting a mailbox. Yep. I rented a house in Hyannis on Cape Cod with a couple friends from school. There were no PO boxes available. So I bought a mailbox and a post. Little did I know the old guy next door watching me was a contractor. As I screwed the box onto the top plate, he came over and said, you want a job? I build houses and that was your resume. Good thing, too, because I had lasted about 2 days as a waiter. That was a great summer.
