Im slowly working thru the problems Ive been havin overhauling my 86 Cutlass Supreme. I pulled a Chevy 350 (4 Bolt Main) out of an 89 Silverado, disassembled, rebuilt, cleaned, painted, and added chrome accesories (Valve Covers, Timing Cover, Oil Pan, Air Cleaner, Headers). So now I need to find a 700r4 Transmission to drop this BAD *ss in my Cutlass. I need to find one for a good price. I know my GBody Brethren can help me out. Right? Anyway, please drop your comments and send me in the right direction to help this Baller on a Budget.

Why do you want a 700r4 if it's a budget build?

I just want a good transmission for this project. But Im always open to other options. Ive been told the 200r4 is a horrible transmission for this situation. How about a 350 TH? The point is... I do want to street race with my Cutlass but Im not looking to be a full time racer. I just need to be able to burn these Ford Drivers and Import Tuners occasionally, while still maintaining my everyday vehicle.

Ive got a built 2004r calling your name.....all the goodies and will hold up to low 10's all day long in a full weight car!!

2004r's are good transmissions, just not anyone can build them so they get a bad rap.200's have basically the same gear ratio's as a th350/400 with overdrive.

700's have a low 1st gear that is only good for tire spin and the split between gears is to great IMO

I think you'll be fine with a th350 in good condition. Just make sure the bellhousing will bolt up to your transmission.

Any GM automatic will do, but a th350 (short tail) is easiest. Then the 2004r. It's not that you can't use a 700r4 but you'd need to modify the crossmember most likely. It can also be tricky setting up the tv cable. If you can weld, I'd find a nice th400 for the simple fact that they can handle about as much power in stock form as you'd throw at it with a mild 350. If not, try to find a built th350. This is of course, if you want it on budget or cheap.

Why would u need to weld to install a th400???

HRPartsNStuff carries a th400 to stock 2004r mount....and a th350 and 2004r both use the same xmember.

If you are paying over $250 for a bench rebuild on a 350/400,you are paying to much!

i know nothing about the issues at hand but i can say to the OP nothing wrong with ford...... 8) 8) 8) were still in business i keed i keed

Lol... Well anyway, back to GBody sh*t. I have a 700r4!!! Now Im wondering how much it should cost to rebuild? Unless somebody else wants to trade my 700r4 for a new or newly rebuilt TH400. Any takers?

Depending on where the mount bolts up, he might need to make a bracket on the crossmember to bolt up the larger transmission. It's just extra headache, why not get something you know would bolt right in place? (...and also use the original driveshaft to save $)

The average rate around where I live is about 800-1200$ for a good rebuild. I'm sure you could cut over 50% of that price if you do it yourself.
