It sounds like that teacher needs to quit if he doesn't like cars and he is teaching auto shop class. I grew up around cars; two brothers are mechanics and one used to be in auto body (I have six brothers all total and all seven of us like cars, it used to look like a car lot at our house when we were growing up). Anyway, I like the looks of this site and everyone is very friendly, so I appreciate the welcomes from everyone.

Welcome and hi back.

Please ignore that subversive link Blake442 posted.( Look I used a 3 syllable word).

Anyway, enough of that SBC in a Pontiac stuff, put a Pontiac in it.

The only hard part is finding 301 mounts, I happen to "know" a guy that has some.

A mild 350 makes a great driver. If you want more fun go 400 or 455.

The Olds pictured below has a destroked 455 in it.

Been there done that,,, 19 years ago did 305 chevy to 455 Pontiac swap. Probably the first in my area to do it! It's better if you had started with a V8 car but....Shotgun is correct, put a Pontiac motor in it and you will be happier! All you have to do is use 301 motor mounts as Shotgun said, and depending what transmission you use you may have to cut the driveshaft, (I had to for my TH400) and i also had to manufacture a bracket for the shifter cable and a switch on the gas pedal for the electronic kickdown. But other than that....it went right in! transmission and all~
Oh,,,, and by the way,,, the Grand Prix only had the 455 in it until the 1976 year, that was the last year available, I also had a 72' with a 455 and a 77' with a 400. And your 1983 model is the only 80's model that didn't have a hood ornament,...not sure why.

What are your goals / tenative plans for the car? How do you plan to use it? I am also a fan of the BOPC big blocks. Thats Buick Olds Pontiac & Cadillac. 😉 Never been of the follow the herd mentality. But mostly do what YOU want to do with the car AND have fun with it.

Thanks guys for the advice. I actually think the 455 idea is great! I would love to turn this car into a street/strip car and eventually (after the PhD is finished and more money is coming in) make the car even faster (Procharger, etc.)

I once put a 455 in a '70 Nova, how weird is that? It was the most fun I have ever had in a car. My brothers (the mechanics) helped with that build up and it was wild and fun and fast too. I was in college, doing my student teaching. I was popular with the students, that is a fact. Then I sold it to my brother to get a car with better gas mileage. Bad idea.... sigh...

For now, I will be driving it and fixing the appearance up. Then we will see how fast I can switch it to a v8.

Drive it and collect parts. Finding an inexpensive complete Pontiac 455 is not as eazy as it used to be. Best is to find an old Catlina or something so you have brackets and all. Also find out from those who have put them in gbodys what are the harder parts if any to track down / fabricate and start tracking down some of those parts. My Cutlass is more of just a hot street as oppossed to a hard core street strip or pro tour car. Anyway with the 200-4r, lock-up converter, reasonable cam, & Q-jet despite 509ci managed to get 17.0 mpg on 70+mph highway trip two days after running 110mph in the 1/4. (even had AC) So with big cubes you can do a reasonable job of being fast AND reliable AND fuel efficient.
