this may sound realy stupid, but freshened up a 305 chevy i had around with so high out put heads an edelbrock lg4 performer cam and uese the intake and 600cfm edelbrock that was on the 283 that was in my cutlass.
i have the engine in the car everything is hooked up properly. ive tried ad and tried to get to run several times and have got it to but its very very choppy and and back fires through the carb alot. i made sure the marks on the new timing chain were lined up correcly when the engine was out of the car so i dont believe valve timing is the problem. but i have tried and tried to get the distributor so it will fire up and run right but no matter what i do it gets worse or just good enough to start and idle all choppy and backfire, i just cant get it right. if anyones got any kind of idea what i should do it would be greatly appreciated

ive double check the firing order every time i go to try and get runnin. its 18436572

first stupid question: the cam isn't a 4-7 swap cam is it?
if it's an hei distributor with the computer controlled timing, unplug the 4-wire EST plug on the module/dist base.

non computor vacuam advance dist. not a 4/7 swap, i d say more but i gotta run to work

your distributor could be in backwards. try pulling it out and spinning the pointer 180 degrees so it will line up and lock in the other way on the oil pump shaft

If your dist is in 180 degrees out try swapping the wires straight across the cap from oneanother, IF that does it ,then move the distributor

i dont believe it to be 180 degrees out cause then it would run at all right? the only thing me and my brother have come up with is the possibility we didnt set the valve lash correctly, possibly tightened the rockers to little or to much, cause we may not have done properly in mad dash to finish before we got hit with rain last week( no garage next few days aint lookin good round here either). we are figuring if we didnt set the valve lash corectly a valve or valves could possibly be sticking open or shut, i have no idea if im even close to being near right, but it was just a thought my brother was going through and reseting the lash today so well know if our theory was correct this weekend at the earliest probably. thanks for the input

if it runs really choppy and backfires through the carb its most likely a timing issue. check to make sure all the plug wires are in the right spot. then maybe your timing is WAY off. like when you get it to run but really bad, try moving the distributor either way so if that helps

im sorry if this sounds bad or mean, but you are not telling me anything i dont know ive tried it all, nothing worksjust runs like crap, or really like crap ill go through it all over again whenever this storm is over with
