Hi
I own a 1980 cutlass 4 door with a 231 v6 and metric 200 combo when your starting off and when your hauling some but she cuts cuts and returns but does this alot once you let go of the throttle she won't do what is wrong with her ? my carb was rebuilt by our carb guy then replaced I'm wondering if anyone can help me ?

As I read your post, I was thinking clogged/dirty carb until I read that it's rebuilt. Check your fuel line and your fuel pump, I have the same motor and had the same issue. I cleaned the carb and it was still happening, replaced fuel pump, and it runs like new.

The people before me said the fuel pump was replaced though is there any way I can check and see if the fuel pump Is bad ??

If you know a mechanic, he can check it, most likely for little or no charge. If (and only IF) you know how to, you could unconnect the lines going to/from the pump and with a bright light, check for gunk around the connections on the pump. If the pump is recent as the people say, you will see no or very little gunk. If the inside of those connection tubes looks like the stem of a tobacco pipe, this is your problem.

If you believe the people are telling the truth and the pump is indeed new, it could be the fuel lines, as replacing the pump but having dirty almost clogged or leaky fuel lines will still cause the car not to run right.

I would just have my mechanic look at it, he knows how to check it by just pumping gas through it with no disconnections or danger. I can do some work, but I don't trust a smoker like myself to mess with something as delicate and dangerous as fuel lines.

Hope this helps

No problem, hope it works out for ya. BTW another telltale sign that you have a fuel pump or leaky/dirty fuel line issues is that in the morning you have to pump the accelerator like 10 times to get the car to start, even if it is not cold. While this can also mean a carb issue, since you have a rebuilt carb (and I cleaned mine, but the car still had to be pumped up to start until I replaced the fuel pump), I doubt that the carb is to blame.

Well she starts right up right up cold or freezing hot or warm but she won't let you give her throttle till she warms up THen once it warms up you can drive her but when you get on her she cuts in and out

Mine is the same way, still will cut off on you if you don't let her warm. It had to be pumped up quite a bit every time in the morning, cold or not, when my fuel pump was bad and lines were clogged. Maybe that issue only comes up when you have the combination of the 2, not just 1.

She sat for two years with a little gas in it what if I send some fuelcleaner through the system will that unclog them?

It will. Or at least it will make it a little better to the point that you know that this is indeed the problem, and you know how to further fix it.

Since the car sat for so long, the "cut and return" could also mean the timing is a lil off. If you had the timing belt replaced by a person that knows what they're doing, this is not the problem. But if you had it done at Jiffy Lube for $100 or the belt is old/stretched out/misaligned, or the pulley is missing teeth, that could be causing the car to cut and return.
