With the price of gas so low now I am filling up my tank. I am a senior and drive less than 1,000 miles per year. I live in the #10 most congested city in the USA and gas mileage is always the lowest you can experience. My trips are 1.5 miles to 4 miles and I always let the engine warm up for 5 to 7 minutes. My last check after a fill up showed 17.2 miles per gallon. The car does not have the electronic carb and always passes the state emission test running almost as clean as a new car. Years ago I was getting 26 miles per gallon on freeway driving and believe I can better that now since the 15% ethanol requirement has been dropped - I think.
The V6 engine has plenty of power for most driving situations with superb acceleration at some speed ranges. Steep hills at freeway speeds tax the engine because of the low differential ratio and the 350 transmission has a real winding second gear gear ratio. So shifting back to 3rd on steep grades after high revs in second does not gain speed. Anything other than that - the V6 is the perfect engine as very steep hills are not common in many places. It is also easily modified to put out a lot more power if you are in a state that does not test emissions.
