So im redoing the differential and ring and pinion in my 1979 oldsmobile cutlass salon 442. Did it come with cats? My boces teacher says i need converters on the exhaust to pass inspection but my dad and i don't think we do. Doesnt a car in NYS become exempt from the converter test if it is over 26 years old? Thanks.

Yes, it is suppose to have a catalytic converter, depending on your area, and the garage you take it to, you might get away without one. It is true, at 25, the vehicle becomes a "Safety Inspection" only, so in reality, they shouldn't even be looking for emission equippment.

You shouldn't have a problem. I live in NY and had mine inspected in August. The guy checked the lights, tires, horn and gvae me a sticker.
