Install new alternator now light is on with key or engine running

Installed a new alternator and the alternator light is on when car is off no key in ignition. I put the old one back on and all is fine. Bad voltage regulator on new one??? I am exchanging it but curious if this ever happened to any one. Thanks. Tim
