I want to get rid of the idiot lights and put the factory gauges in my 83 camino what would I have to do to make it work
Thx

you have to get the cluster that already has the guages w/o dummy lights and then swap out the cluster. if ya wanna keep yer speedo with the correct mileage you have to swap yer old speedo into the new cluster. also on the back the printed circuit board is different than your dummy light one so make sure thats not damaged. i recently got a cluster form a monte that had all the guages and i swapped the tach out but kept the dummy lights. to do that i had to swap over the printed circuit from the one w/o dummy lights to my old cluster so i did lose a few dummy light bulb spots, but thats ok because i already have after market gauges.

So what your saying is he needs the gauges and the circuit board too. I'm thinking of doing this too is why I ask. I got a spare gushes cluster and box in my closet. So is that all that is involved? or do I have to do any wiring ? Also my cluster is from av8 and I have a v6 . Will that cause any problems?

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

v-6 & v-8 tachs read differently (approx 25% off).Did the idiot to gauge swap years ago, seems like I had to use the part of the dash the cluster came from (Olds??) to use the assembly. Matched wiring up & it worked, But later went to autometers when I could afford them.

well ya need the whole cluster becasue the plastic backing has special clips that set into pins on the back of the gas/volt/oil/water gauges which also attach the printed circuit to the cluster. the cluster housing is needed from a doner car other wise yer pritty much out of luck.

There was a thread in the last few weeks on elcaminocentral where someone put in an aftermarket tach with factory gauges flush with factory gauge black plastic trim.I,d paint the trim ring black to blend better. here,s the link.

Actually, the printed circuit is the same. I have swapped out a few and you just need the gauge pack. The senders need to be swapped out tho. Just push the cluster into the prongs. to verify the operation, ground out the sender wires and the gauge will react. It's not tough at all. There may be differing prints from the GM plates, but so far, the chevies have all been the same.

The Tach is the tough part. Hard to find and not cheap. I just got a replacement instrument pod that included a tach. $300. I jumped on it. Just be patient, they pop up from time to time. In the meanwhile, you van replace the lights with the gauge pack now, as it's a seperate component. just go easy on the screw torque. the clusters are delicate and strip easily. I have an extra working gauge cluster if you want. It's on the for sale area. best offer, I figured why hoard.
