Insurance fraud attempt

I wonder if there is a central place to see if people are using my good driving record and credit to open cheaper policies? Like a credit check?

I don't get it... What is the scam? What is the scammer going to do with a policy on your car?

They call the insurance company and claim I hit them. Something like "Your client hit me and caused $5000 in damage. We exchanged information but now he won't respond. I have his driver ID and policy number". Many years ago a jerk went through a red light and hit my Wife's car. They exchanged info and then the dick would not respond to his own insurance company. The company said they could not force him to respond. They said they would default judgement to us, and cancel his policy. Unbelievable right? I'm pretty sure the scammer is counting on that.

That doesn't even sound do-able. Your insurance company would contact you about an insurance claim against your policy. Believe me, before paying out any money, they'd give you every opportunity to respond to get your side of the story, if there was one.

Well, it was a while ago, but that is what happened. The dick was driving his mom's car, and "could not tell what the light was because of SUN GLARE". I said- "You could not tell what the light was- so you GO?" He ghosted his own insurance and the agent was as pissed as we were. We got paid though, so screw him.

So my daughter has a friend in the next town over that handles the car leases for a local company. On Monday five people came in asking why they were getting Progressive car insurance. Then yesterday another one came in, same thing. When they went to report it to their local Police, they knew all about it already. My NYPD detective I spoke to was so intrigued by all this he opened up a case and was going to confer with the other Police dept. Neither of us could figure out a benefit to all this that made sense. He said it may make criminal sense. He felt it may be a ploy to use people with good insurance records to add on people who can't get insurance anymore. The plot thickens.....

Ah, so the scam may be that they're paying insurance premiums but using the good records of unsuspecting people that actually didn't take out the policies in question.

I'd call Progressive and find out who the A-holes were and besides cancelling their insurance, cancelling their Freedom Card for 6 months to a year, or whatever potential mail fraud violations incur as a penalty. Then civil suing them to get paid for trying to ruin your credit standing, which could influence other life factors.

Aaaaand today I get two things in the mail. One is a notice that the insurance is cancelled at MY REQUEST- not because of fraud- and a page with all the penalties for not turning in my registration and plates. Nice. And the other is a fat envelope with the declarations page complete with two insurance ID cards. I think these companies SHOULD be ripped off!!!!
