first engine I rebuilt was a Buick 350 back in the 70's and did it all from reading and looking at the bw photos in a Buick shop manual.
ditto. plus or minus a few decades. and this forum. :p

80K is not that many miles on a SBC to require a rebuild unless it spun a bearing or wiped a cam. My 305 has 100k, still has factory cross hatching and high compression readings that are highly close to each other. Maybe a good idea to put in a new roller chain and oil pump through.
all depends on how well it was taken care off. the last sbc i worked on you could floss in the reflection of the bores and oil was caked up like peanut butter (consitencey, not color) everywhere.
