hi there,

i have a 86 gp with an sbc 350 which was run dry of oil and is now seized. What i want to know is would it be worth getting a kit something like THIS and rebuilding it or should i just start looking for another used 350?

It depend on what you want to do realy...

You can buy a full rebuild kit for a SBC these days, including all gaskets, rings and bearings for under $200 US. You will need a few specialty tools, and there are lots of instructional DVDs you can buy to help you out. If you want to learn, rebuilding the motor will be valuable experience.

On the other hand, you can buy a stock SBC for real cheap as well. This would be a drop in, wire it up, and get it going kinda deal. Typical prices for a bone stock SBC in running condition are around $500-600. I would not pay more than $400, unless it is very low mileage, and in very good condition, ready for me to drop in, and drive.

I think if you buy a used 350 then you'll inherit the problems that come along with it. Also depending on the mileage it may have to be rebuilt anyway.

Since your current motor froze you should take the block to a machine shop to have it looked at. Depending on what you want out of your motor, high po or mild daily driver, will dictate how much you spend. IMHO I think it is worth it to rebuild a motor that you want, the way you want and the parts you want. 😀

It depends on the damage inside the engine. It may be that you will need to start with another short block anyways. If it is too damaged, the machine work it requires could far exceed the cost of a better core.

New 350's are much cheaper than you may think. I know Advanced auto parts has long blocks for around $800 with a 1 year warranty. I'm sure other parts houses have similar deals. Here in Oshkosh we have Performance Products(which is pretty much a mini Jeg's store), they have long blocks in the $800 neighborhood as well as 383 stroker longblocks for around $1700.

If it's just a short-block you're after, they have them too, for cheaper.

But as they others have said, it's all in what you want out of it(for what you want to put into it).

Also remember that things do have a snowballing effect...Bigger displacement, bigger cam, probably means new intake, carb...ect.$$$ect. you get the idea.
