some internet results I looked up say it could be a 307.. dude says its a rocket. I couldn't find the casting numbers last night but I know where to look now, but I did find that it had 3a heads, and I got a number off of the manifold. he only wants 200 for it and the trans since he isn't going to use it ever again.... I have a 307 now and don't care for another, so is this a rocket, or not?

The "rocket" nomenclature that so many people throw around is completely meaningless...

Run the numbers in between the oil filler tube and the intake.

If the heads are original to the engine, it is a 77-80 350 Olds. Not a bad engine for a D/D not much of a performer, but better than a 307, lol. Main thing is how beat is it?

regardless that visually only looks like project for a complete teardown....

well the rocket was just a way to identify oldsmobile engine means nothing what you need to do is look for the casting number on the front of the block next to the oil fill tube behind the timing plate to be sure

All Olds engines are technically called rockets, so since that engine in the pic is an Olds engine, it's a rocket. Now what size is that rocket and what year is it, that's the real question. Going off the heads, it's a 77-80 350, but you need to check the casting number on the block to be sure.

Now why someone would paint a rocket engine that ugly orange color makes you wonder too.....

IF the block numbers match, looks like the crappiest late Olds 350. If it is in good running shape, it will still be a nice improvement. 25hp/torque more than the 307 stock for stock. I see your car is an 87, everyone seems to complain about the lack of power from the swirl port 307. I have only drove a couple and never really floored one. My early 307's were decent all around.

is 25hp really a big jump tho? if im gonna go thru the trouble of putting something else in there, i want a rather noticeable difference in power... like will this have enough juice in it to lose traction when i gun it? like at first, i wanted a 4o3 but i found this engine instead for much, much cheaper and its readily available..

btw, i was going to take it apart and regasket it at the least before i put it in there. then, a bit later put a new cam and intake on it too.

Do you know anything about it as far as mileage??? If I was to buy that engine I would plan on all new gaskets, new cam, lifters and take the heads in to get some work done. It looks like it has seen better days.

He just told me, 135k. definitely gotta take it apart then.. i went back over this morning to look for the casting numbers, there was literally no space between the filler tube and intake. all i could find number wise was this

and this 55 towards the bottom.
