What kind of jack goes in the trunk and how is everything stored? my gp has no jack or spare, tire iron. A picture would really help. thanks.

Depends on what year 😀

The early ones had the old 'ratchet' style jack that you put in the bumper slots, the later ones had the 'scissor' style jack that you actually put under the frame. I don't know what year the switchover was made, but my '79/'81 had/has the ratchet, and the '86 I used to have had the scissor type. The tire iron slots into either jack somehow (off hand can't remember but it goes on there.)

Either way the jack bolts up to the supports behind the spare tire on the passenger side. There should be holes for it. The tire (obviously!) goes in the big hole, and there should be a run-through bolt and a wingnut to hold it down.

BAH, I live in the city, I dont run a spare or a jack. It's a lot of extra weight for gas milage when you have CAA just a call away. But I probably should have a jack, the one that came out of my 84 was a scissor style.

I would rather fix it myself personally - which is why I have a matching full size spare in my trunk. Much less hassle, much quicker and no worries about the tow truck guy doing something stupid 🙂 I guess you can say I don't have patience to wait for someone, nor do I trust them when they get there 😀

I've used my spare once in my 85 and once in my 84. The 85 was no big deal- ran over something and the tire was flat when I came out after work one day. The 84 on the other hand - popped like a balloon on the QEW in the pouring rain going 120km/h... in the left lane.... front right tire. Luckily I was able to get over with no problems.

What sucks is when you run two different sizes front to back. spare for the back wont fit the front, and the front is small enough to screw up your posi. buddy of mine when to a car show in northern mich. blew a rear on the way up and put the spare he had on that was the size of the fronts. It was night time so he keep driving until he got there then had the tire fixed. when he got home his posi was screwed. I think he said he burnt out the clutches or something.

hey sucks you live in NM. i have like 4 or 5 jacks for the 81 -87 style and at least 3 spare tire & rim

eh i still have the factory jack an handle in the car lol
