I have a friend that has an 1980 el camino . It has super sport decals on the doors and is a two tone paint . How can you tell if it is a true ss. Thanks for any help Mario

you could also check the RPO codes if they exhisted back then.

RPO labels didn't exist until '84, so you'll either have to get lucky and find a build sheet still intact, or try and contact GM Media Archive and they might be able to mail you a copy of the build sheet.

If it's an 80, lift the hood and look at the deck just above the brake booster and windshield wiper motor. There you will see a metal stamped tag riveted to that deck. It will have all kinds of alpha numeric codes on it. If it's a real ss yo will see "Z-15" on the 4th or 5th line down. If no Z-15, no SS. Copy the codes down if you wish and you can decipher them here http://www.montecarloss.com/SSThunder/gmcodes.html or here http://www.lonestarthunder.com/m_rpo.php and there are tons of other. They tell mainly what options the car had.. A/C, bench seats, split, color exterior, color interior, ect...
