Just got a 79 Monte and have some questions

Hi guys,

Still new to the old car stuff but just picked up a 79 Monte a few weeks back and still have some questions on things. 1) is looking to jack in up and put it on stands but not sure where to put the stands? 2) I looked down into the carb looks clean also tried to take a good pic, should I still take it off to clean it? 3) The antifreeze is nice bright green and the transmission fluid is a pink to dark pink not sure if I should change both? 4) The car has been sitting for over 10 years without gas, that I found out just a few days ago not sure if that's a good or bad thing? Ill probably have more questions but cant think of them off hand, any help would be nice thanks.

Welcome from another 79 owner. You're lucky that it sat without gas, otherwise you'd be cleaning tar out of the tank!

Well that's good to know my dad was thinking it might have caused problems having nothing in it, like bad seals or out fuel pump.

Welcome. Looks like a good starting point. On the trans fluid being pink....how pink is it? Pepto pink? Mine was nice and red in my 80 malibu turbo 350 trans. Now pink. Radiator leaking antifreeze into trans cooler. Now fluid pink. Kiss of death for the frictions in trans. But you did say antifreeze was nice color green, so maybe I'm wrong. Hope so. I just took a quick look but when I get home from work today I will take a look and a few pic's for the transmission fluid and the antifreeze then post them up.

Here are some pic's of the fluids after the 10 or so year sit. Does oil breakdown if it's not being used?

Just judging from dipstick pics it looks more brownish than pink. Maybe just a change of trans fluid and filter. Antifreeze appears to look ok. You can maybe check antifreeze with hydrometer.

I was thinking about just changing all 3 just to be sure but not sure where to put the jack stand on an older car like this. I do not see a pinch weld like the newer cars, do you know of a spot I can put them?

Your Monte has a full perimeter frame under the car. As long as the frame is solid, and not rotted out anywhere (check the rear frame rails behind the rear wheels for any evidence of serious rust), putting stands under the frame will support the car. Probably the best spots to use are just behind the front wheels, and just ahead of the rear wheels. If you're not sure, don't take any chances-get someone knowledgeable to help you.
