So I put my Monte up on jack stands to an oil change, I drain all the oil out and then I get ready to pre fill the filters with oil( I have dual remote filters)
So I notice a difference internally between the two filters, one I can see almost to the bottom which I am used to and the other has something up high inside.
I call K & N and ask about it and was told they have different companies that manufacture them and was told one might be old stock, I replied they are from Summit do you really think they would have old stock? So I am still told they are the same.
So I go to fill the one in question and it takes less than a cap full of oil and basically spits it out and what is in won't go down
I contact them again and the tech guy says send them the pictures I have.
So in the meantime I have my buddy go the local Autozone to pick up the only one they had in stock, it ends up being the correct style so at least I can finish my oil change.
So I am still waiting to hear back at what K & N says but just replacing a filter I already bought a second time is not going to cut it.
These are the Ford style HP-3001 that I use. the first picture is a standard filter where you can see close to the bottom the last three are of the questionable filter.

UPDATE: They just informed me it is a "rolling design change" and it will open up and let oil in under pressure, I tried to explain that having to run two dry filters on the front of my car is not going to work for me, looks like I will be using a different brand filter next oil change.

Can you push down on that center piece? Is it spring loaded? I wonder if it is part of some way to prevent oil bypass and keep things flowing in one direction and always thru the filter. As for old parts on the shelf many years ago I bought a set of 15x15 weld wheels for a pro street GTO I was doing and the wheels have date stamps, one was dated almost two years before I got it so to get a match I sent them both back.

I think what you are seeing is a anti drain back valve. It keeps oil from draining back into the pan while your engine is not running.

I tried pushing down the whole assembly inside with an extension and it would not move and also tried pushing on just the inner part with a smaller extension and it felt like if I pushed any harder something would break, it seems strange that they did not seem to know about this design change until I questioned this.
I will probably cut this filter open just to see what is really going on inside there.
This what the inside of my current filters look like.

You may be right, some filters are mounted on an angle on some motors and the oil will drain out of the filter. I will be interested to see what you learn when you cut it open, maybe a anti drain back that was assembled wrong and does not work. Good thing you didn't use it, if it is bad you could of had motor damage.

565 I had the same issue when i was racing with the block mount 1qt SBC filter from K&N, I did find a box a black case filters that were the old design, but then changed to the "race only" white can, but I ended up changing over to Wix racing filters because I could buy them by case from Napa. My local Advance Auto could order the white can K&N but I left with a headache every time I had to deal with them guys, changing the oil 30 times a year buying by the case is much easier

It does appear to be some sort of anti drain back valve, if I push from the bottom up (towards the threaded end) it will move.
This valve set up is all part of the filter assembly, there is only a spring underneath and the rubber piece on top and then the case.

The problem I have with this set up is not being able to put oil in the filter prior to installing and I have never encountered this issue with
a K & N or any other brand of oil filter I have used where it won't let me put oil in it and I am not comfortable installing a dry oil filter especially on my big block.
