Got a 88 monte with a 305 and it's got a knock when it starts and when you put it in to any gear the guy I had got it from said it was the flywheel and it needed to be pulled & tightened.

Something you might do is remove the flywheel cover and check the torque converter bolts for tight. Likely a cracked or broken flywheel, but you might get lucky and find the bolts loose in the torque converter. I have seen it happen before.

I have also seen where someone put in torque convertor bolts that were slightly too long and even though they were tight they would not snug up the convertor.

I was thinking the same thing.

Is this only from a stop or when moving too? Also is it worse in one direction than another? I had a bad motor mount causing it to twist and make that noise when starting from a stop. Was the worst in reverse. Never happened when moving though.

I fixed it, it was like someone just put the flywheel bolts in hand tight because, I could spin em but it's fixed and she's runnin fine.

Excellent news. Gotta love easy/inexpensive repairs.
