I know a lot of people use Superbriteleds.com but I thought they were a little too pricey for something I just wanted to try out plus I wanted to try different colors to see what looked best with my gauges so I bought mine from:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/20-PCS-Super-Wh ... 3a86d92d7a

I have them in my dash, running lights and license plate lights the ones I used come with a built in diode so they only work one way the cheaper ones do not come with a diode.
I tried blue, red and green in my dash but decided to go with the white, I will say the blue looked really cool but made the faces of my gauges harder to read and red had a similar effect while the greens were easy to read the green glow looked a little odd but to each his own.
Also dimming does not really work it basically turns them off when you dial it down.
Here is a video of my led dash lights before I painted the gauge bezels black and replaced the steering wheel. http://youtu.be/-78xsO_Dydg

LED's are diodes. they all will only work one way unless they have a special circuit that enables them to be wired backward and still operate.

I was referring to the in line diode on the power lead not the actual Light Emitting Diode and you are correct that the LED only works one way.
