Tremcald rustoleum black gloss is an awesome paint for the job too. I used it on all my wheel wells and they turned out great. It's better than that rubberized rocker guard crap.

If you are painting the whole engine compartment you can do whatever you want, but most factory engine compartments are not very glossy, I used matte on mine and I've seen semi gloss. Glossy with a clear coat might stand out alot though.

try and use a high temp paint too, just in case.
