So I just picked up a Hurst lightning rod shifter. It's missing the knobs and buttons but I see I can buy some new ones so no big deal. Anyways, the only problem I have is I don't know if it's a 3 or 4 speed shifter and was wondering how to tell as the guy I bought it from didn't know either. I think it's a 3 speed because when the left lever is pulled back all the way, it is locked and can't be pushed forward. So you'd have the 1-2 shift on the right lever, then the 2-3 shift with the middle lever. I am assuming that because you can't push the left lever forward for a 3-4 shift, that would mean it's for a 3 speed trans right? Or am I completely wrong? I can post some pics if needed.

I saw a post either here, or on 78-88olds.com that had pictures and answered your exact question. Just do a search for it.

Well I found a link for oldspower.com but the website does not want to load. I also found this one http://www.78-88olds.com/forum/showthread.php?t=472 which I think pretty much explains it. I guess the cam (big pin that goes through all the shift levers) will stick out about 1 1/2" on the right side on the 3 speeds so a staging rod can be added. So it looks like mine is a 4 speed, which kind of sucks as I have no use for it. But then again I guess they are rarer than the 3 speeds. I just don't get why you wouldn't have a 3-4 shift. Here's some pics of mine.
