so i got a set of lighting rods last night, got them cheap, they are far from perfect but the chrome and the nobs are good and they are near complete.

question 1, the guy said they were out of a hurst olds, i know most (maybe all) hurst olds had 4 speeds, is that true? id so they have to be 4 speeds?? i read that the 3 speeds were aftermarkets and were from the late 70s?? not sure if thats true. the piece of metal that the main lever would lock into for the gears is busted off but i think that it looks like a 4 to me. does anyone have pics of the lower part of the lever, the part that clicks into that spring loaded deal?

question 2, htis is going into a 86 442 with factory floor shifter, do i need to change anything or just hook it to the existing cable?

question 3, where can i get replacement parts? i need what i am guessing to be nylon bushings on the bottom ends of the rods, i need a push button and maybe some other minor parts, i heard that there are rebuild kits?

i think thats it for now

All 83-84 H/Os came with the 200-4R four speed auto. All have four speed Lightning Rods.

Lightning Rods didn't come out until the 1983 H/O, so they can't be from the late 1970s. On the other hand, Hurst did sell aftermarket versions in the 1980s.

Three speeds have longer rods and have a provision for a staging rod on the right side of the shifter shifter cam. If your shifter cam is sticking out on the right side it's a three speed.

Unique cables and brackets go with L-rods, you need to fab something up or find them online.
You need to find the correct shifter cable mount and cable, a stock TH2004R cable will not fit.
Here is a large rectangular base plate:

There is also a unique console bracket that secures the console at the front where the stock shifter would bolt up.
You will need to cut the stock console as marked here:

You will also need to drill a hole on the lower right to accept the allen screw to secure the top plate, rubber boot and metal underplate that the brushes mount to:

well i am cinfused as hell now. the guy said it came out of a hurst olds and described the car to me and everything but it has that cam sticking out the right side with a hole through it so it must be a 3 speed? the damn piece for the main shifter to lock into is busted off so i cant tell by that. whats special about the cable? can i use a overlay for a hurst shifter adn cut out a stock shifter plate to make the console plate work?

Sounds like you have a 3-speed, lot's of people advertise 3-speeds as 83-84 H/O shifters because they either don't know about the difference or even bothered moving the levers to find out.
The cable is much longer and the housing is metal not plastic, you can find them aftermarket online as well as the brackets.
You shouldn't have to use the stock shifter plate, the LR top plate will sit in there just fine without having the under plate and boot.
These guys have a good visual of what's needed:

ok so it has gotta be a 3 speed, is there any way to convert it? if i were to keep it and rebuild it i could put it in my calais i suppose but thats allot of work for a car that is not my main project. dangit, i was hoping it was a 4 speed! I already got the 120 mph speedo for my 442, plan on lightning rods for the 4 speed and the hurst hood buldge. im not crazy about the spoiler though. trying to go after a semi custom 442 with all the cutlass desirable parts.
