little hard starting after carb rebuild

so i just rebuilt my carb in my 83 cutlass calais 305 th250
i epoxied the well plugs
could the fuel pump lose its prime? is there suppose to be a check valve?

Yes the pump can loose its prime, but with the carb full of fuel you should never know it did. Are you talking about the very first start after a rebuild with a dry carb, or has the car run and is just hard to start at times? What kind of carb are you running? What kind of fuel pump are you running. More info would help alot.

it was running after i rebuilt it and wanted to see if it would start after a day without excessive cranking
well it did start without the excessive cranking but i thought it would be less
