Lock up convertor

I think the main issue is making sure the TV cable is adjusted properly. I think the bowtie overdrives kit/bracket is supposed to be the simplest in terms of setting it up, that's why it's hella expensive. If the TV isn't adjusted properly you will definitely burn up the trans in a hurry.

In terms of the lockup your transmission I believe it's going to run warmer and may eventually take a dump. You can swap out the converter to a non-lockup, like Art Carr prefers to do on his trannies. If you have the lockup converter you should have the lockup activated IMO. Plus it'll save you a little fuel. Not sure what your RPM will be on the highway without the lockup though.

my cutlass's 200 r4 has been running fine without it for the last six years. I have 3.73 out back. It takes a little longer to go into 4th gear. I bought a tci harness and shift kit back then and I still have them in the box. All bs aside it runs good with i little chirp in second sometimes.

I've taken my cutlass on many long drives as well. It might depend on how you beat on it. I also have a heavy duty cooler that has helped it live.
the kit from tci was expensive it cost me 75 bucks then. you might be better if wiring your own switch just remember to turn it off. You can get better parts for it and make it a non lock up as already mentioned. you have something good to start with.

My malibu had a 700R4 when I bought it and it had "12,000" miles on it. It never had anything to make it lock. When going down the highway, if you got off the gas just a little bit and then got back on it. There would be a slight slip than it would grab/jerk. As the transmission got more miles behind a ZZ4 it would slip a little more before grabbing. That transmission is now in my S10 and has not gotten worse after 20,000 more miles. For some reason that I've been too lazy to look into, that transmission still doesn't lock in 4th....my two cents

Im putting an older engine in my 83 h/o, I will be eliminating my computer box.How do I get my lock up convertor to function without computer?
Is this your original transmission? Or do you have the wiring going to the transmission yet? If so you can ground the tan/black wire in the ALDL plug under the dash and your converter will lock up( use a toggle switch here). If you don't have the factory wires going to the car anymore you will need to determine which wire in the four pin plug at the transmission is the purple wire and which is the tan/black wire. The purple wire is the power (pos) side of the converter and the tan/black is the neg side. The purple wire goes through the brake switch. The other wire in that plug should be green/white and that is the trans state so the computer knows that the trans is in third gear. Pretty simple system, remember, it was engineered in the 70's. Be sure to verify the polarity of the purple wire, it's been a while since I wired mine up.
