Would 15/50 not be to thick for my new motor?
For a newer engine, yeah likely, for an older model engine with wider bearing clearances, no. From your user name, it looks like you have a 455? If so, it would be just fine. Contact mobil if you still feel uncertain, I'm sure they will recommend the same oil.

Yeah I have an olds 455 and ive heard of people running 20/50 I just never believed in running a thick oil in a new motor.

It won't hurt it. I've ran 15w40 in my 350 olds since it was rebuilt. Has a hair under 30k now.

I am going to run brad penn and will be using 10/40. When speaking with the tech at brad penn he recommended I stay with the same viscosity that was for my gen 1 sbc.

I would call the company of oil you're interested in using or multiple and check with them what oil is recommended. Those companies have done the r&d on wear and tear oil consumption and so on.

Amsoil makes a high zinc oil as mentioned.

I run rotella-t, i know a lot of people dont like it. Engine shop swears by it and i have had no problems.

Okay so going by the chart you posted the oil I've been using has a decent amount of zinc in it. I've been running the high mileage in her. That chart was real helpful. One question though. I've heard that the oil companies have been taking the additives out of the oil. Anyone have any knowledge of this. Had a real well known mechanic tell me that.

With each new certification on oil, more zinc and phosphorus is removed for emissions. Don't be surprised if even more zinc is removed from diesel oil, tons of plugged particulate filters. Moly is quite often used as a replacement. Walmart's brand still has CI-4 diesel oil in 15W40. I can get 15W40 in CI-4 but nothing else. I noticed Co-op's CJ-4 15w40 has 1200 ppm zinc too. Problem is the high detergent in diesel oil. That oil in CI-4 was 1421 ppm, betting the Moly was increased. I have heard things about Moly content. 1200 ppm isn't bad but the CJ-4 5W30 and 0W40 synthetics from Co-op are around 900-1000 ppm Zinc instead of 1421 ppm. I can get the silver bottle VR-1 at Napa and CI-4 Am soil plus Walmart and Canadian Tire CI-4 15w40 diesel oil, that is it. Pretty sure shipping oil across the border is a no no, Summit and others won't. We have lax emission laws, here with old vehicles. I am thinking the plugged particulate filters is why CI-4 diesel oil is disappearing. I am a truck driver, the problem is so bad, along with DEF issues, owner/operators are putting pre 2007 rebuilt motors in new tractors. I have actually burnt 5w40 Rotella synthetic diesel oil when I blew a rad hose. Yes it got hot but wasn't impressed for a synthetic. Never ran Rotella since and they changed to CJ-4 shortly after, new stuff is like 1100 ppm.
