Loose steering column help

Wow this seems terrible as far as i can tell. Should I just find another column? How much would i cost to have someone do this? I'm in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

I drove my car w/ this problem for a long time, and I'd guarantee it was worse than yours - I BET it was. My plan was to hopefully get the Billet steering wheel someday and worry about it then. Besides that, if things continue to suck never mind then, it'll stay that way for all I care.

If I held my steering wheel all the way up, it looked to me like the gap was wide enough that maybe if I drilled the perfect sized screw in there the wheel would feel tight again - I just wouldnt be able to use the tilt anymore until I fixed it for real. Still havent tested this theory yet though (car in storage r now)

It's not as catastrophic as you think. If you have a some mechanical aptitude and know your way around tools, it shouldn't be a big deal. But I guess it's also your comfort level. I found that it wasn't too difficult. You have to pay attention to how things come apart and go back together.

If it's still around, check out ESG. It's not that far from you, Dahill road I think. Just past the other side of the elevated. I used to work there years ago and did many of these repairs. Ask for Dennis or Steve, tell them Joe sent you

Here's a link with address and phone number, give them a call:

Bensonhurst right here, lmao... A shop should be charging right around $100 or so to repair this column deal. It's all labor, no parts are typically needed.

The tilt column on my '79 Century worked loose, I removed the steering wheel and tightened the screws with a ball ended allen key. I didnt use thread locker, just tightened them up and they never came loose again. Took me an hour from start to finish.

Roger.
where are these allen keys if all that is involved is taking the wheel off that sounds simple....

It's more than just the steering wheel. You need to remove the steering wheel, turn signal switch, and ignition switch (I think). A steering wheel puller and a tool to compress the retainer plate (a tool is available just for this job, I forgot what it's called).

It was a few years ago now, I also removed the turn signal switch, and if I remember correctly a buddy with two screwdrivers to compress the retainer got the job done.

Roger.

You're so right. It's labor intensive. No parts needed per se...maybe a bad cancelling cam, ignition switch, turn signal switch, etc. But I guess you assess these things while you have things apart.

Small world... I lived in the Gerritsen Beach/ Marine Park area prior to moving down here. Alot of transplanted Brooklynites out there...

Wow. Thanks for all the great help guys! This is good info. I may just try and take it in. Getting a new steering wheel anyway so I'll prob do it at the same time.

Yep, that's why I moved to Reno, and not FL  Florida is just like an extension of NY, it seems. Plus it's too humid for me...
